Introduction to Reception

The  Reception children at Comper are officially on roll at SS Mary and John Primary School (SSMJ), just down the road in Meadow Lane. There is a long standing agreement with Oxfordshire County Council that the SSMJ reception children are educated at Comper. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to really maintain the integrity of and Early Years ethos and approach while our 4 and 5 year olds start their primary school journey.
To apply for a Reception place at Comper you need to apply through the County Council Admissions to SS Mary and John Primary School. Please see our admissions information. If your child attends Comper Daycare or Nursery, this does not automatically guarantee them a place in Comper Reception.
How our Reception is organised
We have 60 children in Reception at Comper. They are organised into two classes of 30, Our Reception  Mango and Strawberry class. Each class has a class teacher and two early years professionals working in it. We are very lucky to have a high number of adults to children in each class.
While they do some of their learning in their class groups they also spend much of the day being able to mix together during 'child initiated, free flow' time. This gives them lots of opportunities to get to know each other and make friends across the classes.

Learning in Reception

Children learn through a combination of adult directed, adult guided and child initiated activities. They learn through playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outside. A large percentage of your child’s day will be spent in what's referred to as 'child-initiated, free flow' learning, at Comper  we refer to this as explorer time. This is where the children are able to move around the learning environment and independently select activities and resources, supported by the staff in the unit. During explorer time the children have access to their classroom and a large, newly refurbished garden. Staff encourage and support the children to become independent and resilient learners.

As the year progresses the activities and experiences that the adults plan for the children become increasingly more challenging. In the summer term we work hard to prepare the children for their transition to Year 1 at SSMJ. We work closely with the SSMJ staff to ensure that they have a smooth  transition as possible. If you have any questions about this please speak to your child's class teacher.

You can find further information about how learning happens at Comper by following our 'Learning at Comper' tab.
